Head Lice Treatment
Looking for a head lice treatment can be a little confusing for some but NitWits have made it simple, developing a range of products that are kind to kids and help to quickly and effectively eradicate head lice. Find out where to buy NitWits.
There are a few methods to get rid of head lice. All treatment methods can be carried out relatively quickly and kids are back to school the next day.
One stop treatment method
A treatment using dimeticone can eradicate the head lice and their eggs by means of asphyxiation. Dimeticone is a silicone base fluid that has seen phenomenal results in killing head lice AND their eggs. This method eliminates the need for meticulous combing as the treatment kills the embryo inside the head lice egg. The egg itself can only be removed physically as it is glued to the hair shaft, however the head lice egg will not hatch.
It is important that the treatment is applied as per the directions, covering the entire scalp and all the hair. The nymphs live directly on the scalp in the very early stages of their life and they are almost translucent in colour which makes them difficult to locate and identify.

Head Lice Treatment and Combing method
Another type of head lice treatment uses key active ingredients such as eucalyptus or tea tree oils and is designed to paralyse or suffocate, effectively killing the head lice. This method of treatment will require combing to ensure the head lice eggs (nits) are removed from the hair.
The treatment should cover the entire scalp and all of the hair and be left for approximately 30 minutes. Massage the treatment into the scalp and hair for five minutes to ensure the treatment cream or foam penetrates the head lice.
Following treatment you’ll need a special nit removal comb to remove the nits. Eggs that are left in the hair will hatch in 7 – 10 days and breed a new generation of head lice.
The hair should be divided into 4cm sections and, using the metal teeth of the comb, run the comb from the root of the hair to the tip. After every comb wipe the head lice and eggs on to a tissue and repeat until every strand of hair has been combed.
It is recommended that you repeat this method in 7-10 days to ensure you have removed all head lice and their eggs.

Comb and Conditioner Method
This method does not require a treatment solution as such, it focuses on removing both head lice and their eggs from the hair and scalp with a conditioner and specialized nit removal comb.
NitWits recommend a thick white conditioner to help temporarily stun the head lice, effectively putting them into a daze slowing them down and making them easier to locate and identify. Applied thickly the conditioner will help to untangle knots making the combing process a little easier.
